The challenges affecting refugees and asylum seekers on an individual and on a systemic level are often complex. Effective responses often require a coordinated approach from multiple stakeholders, yet historically organisations that have support refugees and asylum seekers have not worked closely together.
The members of the Refugee Concern Network ("RCN") are trying to increase the effectiveness of services provided to refugees and asylum seekers and strengthen the voices that advocate for them so that we can make best use of our resources to achieve positive change. To that end we want to improve collaboration amongst refugee organisations and better connect support networks for refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong.
If we are able to realise our ideal of collaborative working then the RCN will be a new network of organisations and individuals, which will work collectively to better the lives of Protection Claimants and Refugees in Hong Kong and advocate for their rights.
In practice this will look like organisations working together to improve the lives of protection claimants and refugees through information sharing, mutual capacity building and joint advocacy in the areas such as education, welfare, advocacy, legal support and comprehensive solutions.
Every organisation within RCN is committed to supporting all Protection Claimants and Refugees equally, regardless of any discrimination ground such as age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, religion.
Our journey so far
We are brand spanking new!
Although some of our members have been supporting asylum seekers and refugees for more than a decade - we set up RCN as a collaborative platform in January 2020, when 20 member organisations signed an MOU to take part.
We are so new that many of the things that you would expect to see about an initiative like ours (like a website) are still in the process of being created.
Our biggest achievement
We have a coalition of about 20 refugee organizations, who have agreed to work together! This is no small feat!
Why you should donate your skills to us
By supporting the newly created RCN - your skills will support those working at the forefront of refugee and asylum issues and will ultimately benefit the 14,000 claimants in Hong Kong! We believe this kind of skilled contribution is an incredible, and meaningful thing to do.
